Seat a full masjid in minutes — fairly, by sector and Qibla

An allocation engine assigns every member a seat by their sector's quota and proximity to the Qibla, issues a digital QR pass, and verifies entry with a single scan.

The Problem

Seating a packed masjid off paper lists and WhatsApp falls apart the moment the numbers climb.

For Ramadan or Muharram, hundreds of members need a seat. Hand-managing that means double-booked places, no fair way to honour each sector's share, and arguments at the door over who sits where.

Why it hurts

The front rows nearest the Qibla are the most sought-after, so allocation has to be both fair and fast. One mismanaged list and trust in the whole process is gone — and the entry queue grinds to a halt while volunteers cross-check names by hand.

The Solution

An allocation engine seats everyone fairly — then a scan lets them in.

A seat-allocation and digital-pass system built on Next.js + React + PostgreSQL/Prisma, with NextAuth member login and html5-qrcode entry scanning. Members log in with their ITS number, get a seat assigned by their sector's quota and Qibla proximity, and receive a signed QR pass that volunteers verify at the door.

Our Approach

Set the map & quotas

In the admin map editor we draw the seat map and set each sector's fair share of seats for the event.

Allocate by sector & Qibla

Reserved sector quotas fill first, ordered from the Qibla wall outward, then any remaining seats open to all.

Issue digital passes

Each member logs in with their ITS number and receives one signed QR pass that can't be forged or shared.

Scan at the door

A single scan returns a valid, invalid, expired or cancelled verdict, so the entry queue keeps moving.

Allocation engine

Fair seats, decided in one pass

The engine honours each sector's quota first, then orders seats by distance from the Qibla wall — so the front rows fill before the back, automatically. No spreadsheets, no disputes.

QR pass & check-in

One scan at the door, one clear answer

Each member carries a signed QR pass. At the entrance a volunteer scans it and gets an instant verdict — valid, expired or cancelled — so the queue keeps moving and no two people hold the same seat.

Proof

Every member seated by quota and Qibla proximity — and checked in with a scan.

850 seats allocated by quota and Qibla proximity in a single event
~3s average QR check-in time at the entrance
6 sectors balanced fairly by quota each event
0 double-booked seats — one pass per member, enforced

Entry queues that used to back up at the door now clear in a steady stream.
